Are you ready emotionally for a Disaster?

Not sure you can totally prepare emotional for a disaster but it is good to know how you might react during or after a disaster so you can be ready.

Also during a disaster others around you will be affected emotional so it good to understand what others could be going through so you can be bettered prepared to handle for yourself or others.

If you help others during a disaster you could experience psychological trauma.  Please be aware of the stresses you can deal with and what you can’t so you will not become a victim to emotional trauma.

I took CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training and learned about the possible symptoms that could happen during a disaster.  Below is a list of the psychological and physiological symptoms that you might see during disaster:

Comforting someone in need


  • Irritability or anger
  • Self-blame or the blaming of others
  • Isolation and withdrawal
  • Fear of recurrence
  • Feeling stunned, numb, or overwhelmed
  • Feeling helpless
  • Mood swings
  • Sadness, depression, and grief
  • Denial
  • Concentration and memory problems
  • Relationship conflicts/marital discord


  • Loss of appetite
  • Headaches or chest pain
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain, or nausea
  • Hyperactivity
  • Increase in alcohol or drug consumption
  • Nightmares
  • The inability to sleep
  • Fatigue or low energy

So how can you be prepared emotionally for a disaster, not sure if there is any way to truly be prepared but understanding how your react in stressful situations should give you an idea of how you might act when a disaster happens.

Start by finding techniques to be able to calm yourself and slow down so you can better assess what is going on.   I have found that deep breathing helps me to calm down and think better so I can make better decisions.

Being with a group who is dealing with the same thing can be a big help.  You can draw strength and support from each other.  Who knows there may be a psychologist in the group.

If you are taking medications for emotion challenges make sure you always have some with you where ever you go.  Disasters always don’t happen when you are at home so it would be a good idea to figure out how to have some of your medication with you at all times.
If you have children it will be important to be able to be calm and help them during a disaster.  If they see you being calm and handling the situation it will help them feel safe and help them be able to better deal with what is going on.  Try to always have games or toys with you in your car on when you are out.  HavingGirl with Teddy Bear something a child enjoys or brings comfort will help them during a disaster.
